Websites

I tend to be long winded.  In an effort to curb this, I am listing only  the sites I feel most helpful for my studies.  Some sites were historical and lovely but I have to head hunt somehow.  Sorry historical guys.

I Love Typography – I am in love with M.Wenzel Ode.  I adore simple Arial and Verdana fonts and always select them for my own writing quests.  But ever since this project I have begun to long for these elaborate intricate complicated fonts.  Ode is just lovely and the fact he has displayed all the lower case aplha is dreamy.  I prefer writing in lower and would do so exclusively if I were allowed.

MS Typography – This site rehashes some lingo and basics about type/font which we read in Beaird’s text.

Digital Magazine: CSS Typography – Yipee! :) . This site gives tips and help for applying different fonts in CSS.  This will come in handy.

Ch. 13: Making Money with Your Site

Several ideas are offered to make money using your site.  A basic way to earn money is by leasing some of your space.  Google AdSense is designed to seamlessly blend ads into some of your space.  Amazon Associate affiliation also lets you the site owner/manager make money by linking your relevant material to their storefront.  For the entrepreneur, a quick low overhead route might be opening a PayPal account, establishing shopping carts, buttons, and the usual suspects.

Ch 14: JavaScript and Adding Interactivity

Whew.  This one was a bit complicated for me.  JS is an application which can run programs inside you Web site.  It may be singular and basic like showing updated date and time or more complex like conversion of currencies.  Image rollover, collapsing text all these and more are functions JS can perform.  They basically bling out your sight IMO. Pretty colors and text are wonderful but interactive is blingy.

Ch 5: Imagery

Some key points to keep in mind when determining what images to use are, is it: interesting, relevant, and appealing?

The two best ways for folks starting out to obtain images are do it yourself and purchasing stock images.  Hiring a professional is a bit silly at this point.  After all, if I could afford a professional I would not be reading three books to figure it out.  Plus I am a huge learn to fish kind of gal.

The author issues strong warning to check, double check, and ask permission to use other peoples photos even if they say free use.  I have to rethink my sight because of this.  I have been using open/free images from Flickr but now I am concerned and think I should just take my own photos.
