CLASS MEETING

The class meeting was enlightening.  It was great to meet actual people.  Thank you Brian and Sasha for your help.  Dr. Simon was patient and clarified many issues as they arose.

WEB SITES

w3.org

Hmm. I am not sure how to tackle this one.  As a human who remembers a time before the known internet and after, I am acutely aware of the need to have standards for it.  However, I am not sure why these folks have a say.  I am sure they know more about the web than I do but so what?  CEOs know more than me about economics but I balance my checkbook and they usually can not.

I took a look at who comprised the w3 group and it is “The guy who invented it” and others who are “Invited.“  They base there decisions on “Consensus” etc.

I am not sure how much clout these w3 guys have and neither do I believe they deserve it.  They have a page wherein you can become a part of the w3.  It is fair because you select you country of origin and your for/not-for status and give them a check.

Maybe the web is jacked up because the “The guy who invented itis short sighted and greedy.  If the web belongs to everyone, then its governance should be global, civic, and subject to review.

Basically, the w3 aggravate me. Though I am sure they are lovely in person.

w3schools

OK, this is a fantastic site which can guide you through building a page. Though they use w3 they seem to be a wholly separate entity.  I searched their “About” and there is no affiliation with w3 which I can see.   They are a helpful tutorial for the beginner or advanced web site developer.

Ch 3: Putting Your Page on the Web

Wow.  A lot of information.  The author explains how our computer talks to DNS and Web servers.  This clarifies some things.  However, I cannot help feeling I am misunderstanding things still.  My feelings may fall into the technophobe realm.  Wherein, I cannot believe I actually grasp aspects of internet/web technology.

Much of the chapter discusses what may/may not be appropriate for someone’s needs.  I thought the calculation he provided for bandwidth requirements was useful.

Bandwidth (apprx min) = (estmtd ppl who vst site) x (estmtd pgs brwsd bfr lvng site) x (avrg sz of ea wb pg)

Ch 4: Power Tools

This was an intro into Web page editors and XHTML editing.  I wish I would have read this before I signed up for GoDaddy.com.  GD is wretched for anyone interested in learning Web design.  It is a filtered, over advertised nightmare entity.  If you had any experience or  time to devote to filtering through their junk it might be appealing.

Too late for me.  I jumped headlong into GD.  I got a fab name.  Also, I opted for the DBP (domain by proxy); DBP   is supposed to stop the bad people from bothering me.  That sounded nice.

Anyway, I am themintvint.com.
